How to choose a padel racket: complete guide
Updated on June 21, 2026
Choosing a padel racket is not about buying the one used by your favorite player: it is about finding the one that fits your level, your physique and your playing style. This guide walks you, step by step, through the five factors that truly matter.
First, a note on naming: a padel racket (spelled racquet by many US players) is a solid, perforated bat with no strings — very different from a tennis racket. Throughout this guide we link to the rackets of the 2026 Premier Padel ranking as real-world examples and to our padel racket glossary for the technical terms.
1. The shape of the racket
This is the factor that most defines how a racket behaves. There are three basic shapes:
- Round: a wide, centered sweet spot, maximum control and forgiveness. The best shape for beginners. See our control rackets.
- Teardrop: a balance between control and power, very versatile.
- Diamond: maximum power, with a small, high sweet spot. For advanced players. See our power rackets.
2. The balance
It tells you where the weight is concentrated. High balance (toward the head) = more power, less maneuverability. Low balance (toward the handle) = easier to move and more defensive. Medium balance = a compromise. The higher your level and the more offensive your game, the higher you can go.
3. The core (the rubber)
The inside of the racket defines the feel. EVA Soft and foam cores are softer, more comfortable and easier to play; EVA Hard is more reactive and powerful but demands a hard swing. If your elbow bothers you, prioritize a soft core.
4. The weight
Rackets usually weigh between 345 and 375 g. A lower weight gives you maneuverability; a higher one, power and stability. As a rule of thumb, it is better to err on the light side to protect your arm, especially when starting out.
5. Your level and style
- Beginner: round racket, low balance, soft core. Read our beginner guide.
- Intermediate: hybrid or teardrop racket, medium balance.
- Advanced/competition: a high-end diamond or hybrid, depending on whether you prioritize power or versatility.
